Wilson Junior

The founder and Head Instructor of Carlson Gracie Team in the UK and a third degree black belt under Carlson Gracie Junior, Wilson teaches regular classes at the London academy. Wilson began his Jiu Jitsu journey in Rio back in 1994 and had an extensive and successful competition record.

Dickie Martin

Dickie Martin

Dickie was one of the very first British fighters to have achieved the rank of black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and was awarded his second degree by Carlson Gracie Junior in 2014. He is also a second Dan Black belt in Judo.Dickie was introduced to BJJ by his childhood friend Simon Hayes in 2001, right at the birth of British BJJ and was one of the founding members of Carlson Gracie London.He competes regularly, going from strength to strength: In 2011-2012 he simultaneously held British, European and World BJJ titles at Black belt with a streak of 9 victories by submission. In 2014 he won the World Masters in his division and the openweight bringing home two world championship gold medals.

Simon Hayes

Simon started training martial arts at the age of 7 when he was lucky enough to be taught Judo by Syd Hoare. Simon continued his martial arts training with Tae Kwon Do and kickboxing before eventually finding Jiu Jitsu.He became one of the first BJJ black belts in the country and is now a second degree black belt as well as a 2nd Dan in Judo.Simon has an impressive competition record including British and European BJJ titles.

Simon is an award winning feature film Sound Recordist and Oscar winner so his ability to teach sudents how to get the best out of themselves is unparalelled.

Simon teaches regularly and is one of our instructors for the beginners programme so he may well teach you your first class.

Barney Gorton

Barnaby Gorton

A first degree BJJ black belt under Wilson Junior and a second dan Black Belt in Anglo Japanese Bujustu, Barney has been training in Martial Arts for over 20 years. He has an excellent memory for techniques and is an encyclopedia of jiu jitsu knowledge. Barney teaches once a week and has been a key member of the club since the early days.
Sam Gibson

Sam Gibson

Sam started training at 14 years old and was promoted to black belt by Dickie Martin at 26 years old. He is one of the UK’s elite competitors, medalling at the IBJJF European Championships in 2016 in the blackbelt division. One of only a handful of UK black belts to achieve this feat, Sam has been a prolific competitor over the years with a great deal of competition success.
Sam teaches advanced classes on Monday and Thursday evenings at 7:30 and a mixed class on Wednesday at Midday.

Attila Varga

A graduate of 10 years training with Mihaly Sztraka at the famous Thaifight academy in Budapest, Attila has been teaching Muay Thai for over 10 years.Thai boxing head coach and RKC level 2 qualified kettlebell instructor, Attila will have you throwing your punches and kicks harder and faster than ever before.As well as a fully qualified Thai boxing and kettlebell instructor, Attila is also a qualified primal move instructor and BJJ purple belt.

Glenn Spiers

Glenn Spiers

Glenn started Judo at the age of 15 in a small club in Glenrothes, Fife. While studying at Glasgow University he gained his Black Belt and won both Scottish and British Universities titles. He was also Captain of the Glasgow University and Scottish Universities teams. He was awarded his University Blue for Judo in 1989.Since leaving University he has achieved the rank of 5th Dan and has continued to medal in competition at both Senior and Masters level. He is also a Carlson Gracie Purple Belt in BJJ.

  • As a BJA Level 3 coach since 1999 he has had the opportunity to work with many top class players. He now coaches full-time in schools and colleges in London. In 2013 he was awarded the Sports Coach of the Year by Imperial College London. He is also a BJA Senior Examiner.
  • Since starting coaching with Carlson Gracie London, he has coached four students to Black Belt level and there are a few more on the way. Come along to the Judo classes and you could be the next to achieve the coveted Black Belt.
